Affordables Gives Back to Community by Providing Much-Needed Supplies to Local Schools

Affordables was recently featured in a great article in the Moultrie News in regards to their gracious efforts to support local schools: 

"Mount Pleasant residents Lisa and Zack Kelly are helping teachers and students get organized as they head back to school - and it's free...

Through grass roots efforts, the Kellys gather donations from fellow Charleston area businesses and retailers with 100 percent of the donations going toward purchasing school supplies. The couple founded BlackBoard Marketing to help local businesses support local schools by providing free school supplies to teachers and students. The group's products help build a sense of community and school spirit as the supplies are presented in school colors and display the schools' mascot...

"We reached out to Anna Dassing, the new principal at Moultrie Middle School, who told us that budget cuts were making the school unable to provide students with agendas. So she asked us for help with providing those."

Through partnerships with the Town of Mount Pleasant and local businesses, the couple was able to get sponsorships that offset the approximate $9,000 cost of the agendas.Through such partnerships, the couple provided back-to-school donations to 17 area schools last year [including]...Moultrie Middle School, Drayton Hall Elementary School, Ashley River Creative Arts and North Charleston Creative Arts School."

Eggplant Roulade at Leaf is Dreamy and Delicious

Just look at this healthy, delicious and beautiful dish from Leaf Cafe + Bar Chef Ross Webb. The dish incorporates fresh, seasonal eggplant with goat cheese and jasmine rice. In a creative twist, Chef Webb serves the spinach and artichoke on top of the roulade, then places both over a roasted tomato cream saue that is fused with coconut milk and garam masala. Then the whole masterpiece is garlished with pine nuts toasted in salt, pepper and ghee, then there's a snowy sprinkling of Parmegiano Reggiano. Chief Mullen has served as Chief since 2006 and commands a force of 412 sworn police officers and 137 civilians. Under his leadership, Charleston crime statistics report an overall downward trend with violent crime and property crime decreasing. Based on this trend, the crime rate in Charleston for 2012 is expected to be lower than in 2009 when Charleston was lower than the violent crime rate in South Carolina by 21.97% and the city property crime rate in Charleston was lower than the property crime rate in South Carolina by 9.47%.

Mullen oversees every aspect of public safety in Charleston including traffic control for the Cooper River Bridge Run, establishing Valet Parking in downtown Charleston, and controlling skateboards on our streets.

The Charleston Police Department was the first municipal law enforcement agency in the State of South Carolina to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies

Chef Howard LaFour of Muse Restaurant & Wine Bar

Howard LaFour was born in Singapore, and spent the first seven years of his life there before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska. Inspired by his mother's cooking, he commenced a career in New Orleans at age eighteen under French Master Chef, Rene Bajeux, at Rene Bistrot in the Pere Marque Hotel. After Hurricane Katrina, Howard relocated to Washington D.C. for three years and worked under Chef Yannick Kam of Le Paradou. He then worked at Citronelle under French Master Chef and James Beard Outstanding Chef Award winner, Michel Richard.

In 2008, he decided to move to Charleston, because he felt that it had the appeal of New Orleans with a dynamic culinary culture. He took a position at Cypress and worked under Craig Diehl, where he most recently held the position of sous chef. He arrives at Muse in March of 2011, where his European training naturally complements the restaurant's offerings.

There was a nice crunch from fresh celery, and a little vinegar and olive oil to bring all the flavors together. “We relate to what’s familiar and fresh,” said Chef LaFour, “I try to cook simply, letting the ingredients provide their own flavor.
