Witness to History: Civil Rights Era Photographs by James Karales at the Gibbes Museum

As we celebrate the landmark 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement, the Gibbes Museum of Fine Art invites you to reflect upon the people and events that made the movement possible. Witness to History: Civil Rights Era Photographs by James Karales is on display at the Gibbes until May 12, 2013. Engaged as a photo-journalist for Look magazine, acclaimed photographer James Karales witnessed and documented many historic events during the Civil Rights movement and created some of the era’s most iconic images. Seen here is "Selma to Montgomery March for Voting Rights in 1965" by James Karales.

"Snapshots and Pauses in the World of Jack" Photo Exhibit at Unitarian Church

The Unitarian Church, the oldest Unitarian congregation in the South, is currently hosting a photo exhibit by photographer Jack Hurley entitled "Snapshots and Pauses in the World of Jack". The exhibit will continue until mid-October at 4 Archdale Street in downtown Charleston.

The photos capture inanimate clowns and mannequins as seen by Hurley.  "I catch glimpses like these all over, in store windows, on junk and antique shop shelves and museums, said Hurley. "It is a gesture or look that just makes me pause, smile and say... Got it!"

Jack Hurley, in addition to being an accomplished photographer and real estate executive, is a successful entrepreneur with three Cosmic Dogs locations in Charleston, West Ashley and Mt. Pleasant.

The Art of Smiles and Tiny Cynics: Fine Art Photography by Fran Doggrell

The story, from Fran Doggrell, "There are days when I rarely speak to anyone over the age of 8. As a result I have found my casual conversation in adult settings to be lacking. No one at a dinner party ever laughs at my jokes about animal noises or eating slimy worms. Most will smile in a patronizing “she’s demented” way and turn toward their other dinner partner for some more enlightened converstion. On the other hand, many of my little subjects find me surprisingly comical. 
I have some good jokes and I hear some fall down good responses from them in return. Of course there is the occassional tiny cynic - the old soul disguised as a two year old who does not approve of my rather frivolous remarks. I am rebuked with a priceless expression that shows his level of disapproval - rather reminiscent of my most recent dinner partner."
