The Preservation Society Hosts Author Aϊda Rogers

 The Preservation Society of Charleston’s Book & Gift Shop at King & Queen will host author Aϊda Rogers on June 15th to sign her book State of the Heart. In her book, Aïda Rogers has crafted an artful love letter to our state, with contributions from a host of nationally and regionally recognized writers who've written short essays on the South Carolina places that they cherish.

Thematically organized, this collection offers a geographic and emotional scope that is as diverse as its contributors. Sportswriters describe beloved arenas; historians reflect on church ruins and forts. A playwright recalls the magic of her first theater experience; a food writer revels in a coastal joint that serves fresh oysters.

The anthology reveals a state that is more than a playground for tourists; it's a state of human hiding places that echo in the hearts of its literary citizens. Though presented as a book about place, the collection is ultimately about our shared connections to one another, to a complex common past, and to ongoing efforts to frame and build a future of promise and possibility.

Congratulations to Spoleto Festival USA

Spoleto Festival USA 2013 concluded a memorable season with the Festival Finale on Sunday, June 9. It featured Zydeco band Red Stick Ramblers under a beaming sun and gentle breeze at Charleston's Middleton Place.

The festival comprised a diverse representation of the musical, theatrical, dance, and visual arts. 63,000 ticket-holders took in 160 shows this year, with $2.8 million in box office receipts. Patrons traveled from 19 countries to experience Spoleto Festival USA—an increase from past seasons—and from 48 states within the United States. Congratulations to the Spoleto Festival for yet another successful year!

Karen Stokes Book Signing at the Preservation Society

 The Preservation Society of Charleston’s Book & Gift Shop at will host author Karen Stokes on Sunday, June 9th from 1-4pm during Second Sunday on King Street.

Karen Stokes’ book, Immortal 600 takes place in 1864, when six hundred Confederate prisoners of war, all officers, were taken out of a prison camp in Delaware and transported to South Carolina. Upon their arrival, most were confined in a Union stockade prison on Morris Island. They were placed in front of two Union forts as “human shields” during the siege of Charleston and exposed to a fearful barrage of artillery fire from Confederate forts. Many of these men would suffer an even worse ordeal at Union-held Fort Pulaski near Savannah, Georgia, where they were subjected to severe food rationing as retaliatory policy. Author and historian Karen Stokes uses the prisoners’ writings to relive the courage, fraternity and struggle of the “Immortal 600.”

Tonight at PSOC: "CONVERSATIONS: Charleston In My Time" with Lowcountry Artist West Fraser

Stop by the Preservation Society of Charleston Book & Gift Shop on Monday, June 3rd for a conversation with artist West Fraser. Lowcountry traditionalist painter West Fraser takes us into Charleston "in his time." Reflective of his dynamic methodology in picture-making, Fraser will discuss his process of story-telling through art that captures the passage of time, authentic contemporary culture and a true sense of place.

The Real Estate Studio Hosts "Dawn and Dusk"

 The Real Estate Studio is pleased to host a show by four Charleston artists with their interpretation of “Dawn and Dusk”, with an Artists Reception on Friday, May 24th from 5–8 pm. The artists will also be street side in front of the Real Estate Studio on June 9th during Second Sunday from 11am 4pm.

What does a mud bath in Calistoga, California have to do with an art show? As four Charleston artists relaxed in the famous Calistoga Spa, they thought about doing a show together that would capture the beautiful dusks and dawns they had experienced during their art journeys together. Brenda Orcutt, Patricia Huff, Mary Sayas, and Marty Biernbaum have developed an "artist circle" similar to historical artist groups that traveled together to paint and support eachother. Artistic and creative strength created by the generation of ideas and positive critiquing, encouragement and, of course, just plain fun in painting together, have forged the basis of this show’s work.

The show will remain at the Studio from May 24 – July 1.Wine and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. All are welcome. For more information, contact The Real Estate Studio at 843-722-5618.

On May 12th, Millie West will be debuting her second novel, Catherine's Cross, at the Reinert LePrince Fine Art Gallery at 179 King Street.

"General Nathanael Greene and the American Revolution in the South" Book Signing, May 4th

 The Preservation Society of Charleston's Book & Gift Shop at King & Queen will host author Jim Piecuch to sign his book General Nathanael Greene and the American Revolution in the South, co-edited by Gregory D. Massey. The book discusses Nathanael Greene, a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Greene has often been acclaimed as the second most important military figure of the Revolution, behind George Washington. This book offers new perspectives on Greene's leadership of Continental troops, his use of the mounted troops of South Carolina partisan leaders Thomas Sumter and Francis Marion, his integration of local militia into his fighting force, and his proposal that slaves be armed and freed in return for their military service.

Charleston Chef Showdown: North Vs. South, May 9th

Charleston Culinary Tours’ Charleston Chefs Showdown will take place on Thursday, May 9th from 6:30-9:30pm at the Maritime Center. South of Calhoun Chefs Ross Webb of Leaf Cafe and Steven Ollard of Amen Street are pitted against North of Calhoun Chefs Trey Stabler of Five Loaves Cafe and Shay MacDonald of HoM.

As these competitors go head to head in a series of cook offs to determine who will be named champion, guests will be able to watch the exhilarating live competition and view the judging panel in action. Judges include Stephanie Barna of Charleston City Paper, Josh Keeler of Two Boroughs Larder and Ken Emery of Burwells.

The Passing of a Legacy: Fire Chief Thomas Carr

The Carr family and the members of the Charleston Fire Department invite the community to commemorate the life of Chief Thomas Carr. Funeral arrangements are as follows:

• Visitation: Sunday, April 28, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Stuhr's Funeral Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, West Ashley.
• Service: Monday, April 29, 2:00 p.m., St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Meeting Street and Broad Street, Downtown Charleston.
• Procession: There will be an apparatus procession to escort Chief Carr's ashes from St. Michael's Church to Magnolia Cemetery.
• Burial: immediately following services, Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston.

The Charleston Fire Department would like to thank the community and the fire service for all of the heartfelt condolences and support. The Carr family is very appreciative of the outpouring.

Fourth-Annual Gibbes on the Street Party, May 2nd

For the fourth year, The Gibbes Museum of Art will throw a street party in front of the museum at 135 Meeting Street. Gibbes on the Street will celebrate the unveiling of the People’s Choice Exhibition, and invite patrons to enjoy an evening of food, fun, and music in the middle of Meeting Street. The festivities will take place on Thursday, May 2, from 7:30 – 10pm on Meeting Street between Cumberland and Queen.

Guests will enjoy a melding of the visual and culinary arts with savories and sweets provided by Charleston’s most celebrated chefs. Art with a Twist presents Warm Nights Cool Jazz: Charleston and its Jazz

On Thursday, April 11 at 6pm, Art with a Twist presents Warm Nights Cool Jazz: Charleston and its Jazz at The Gibbes Museum of Art. College of Charleston Arts Management professor Karen Chandler will be joined by members of the Charleston Jazz Initiative as she shares knowledge about Charleston's 20th Century jazz musicians.

Chandler will highlight the many jazz musicians who are native to South Carolina or who were trained with the famed Jenkins Orphanage Band. Through photographs, video clips, and live jazz by the Charleston Jazz Initiative Legends Ensemble, the presentation will show how these musicians contributed to the development and spread of jazz in the United States and around the world. 13th Annual Kiawah Island Art and House Tour

A Wounded Warrior Fundraiser Luncheon is being held at the Harbour Club on April 5 from 12pm-2pm. A portion of the ticket sales as well as proceeds from the silent auction go towards the Wounded Warrior Project which helps honor & empower wounded service members.  

An original commissioned oil painting by the famous Patrick Matthews will be auctioned off at the event. Patrick is the foremost living impressionist artist in America today. He is also selling a limited number of signed and numbered prints for $100, with all profits going towards the WWP. Let Your Voice Be Heard in the People’s Choice Curated Exhibition at The Gibbes Museum

 The Gibbes Museum of Fine Art seeks to engage members of the community, inviting all to stake a personal claim in Charleston’s signature museum by voting for favorite works of art on the People’s Choice website.  People’s Choice: A Community Curated Exhibition will be on display from May 3 – September 15, 2013.

In an effort to gather a variety of voices and diverse opinions, the Gibbes Museum has invited notable people from Charleston and beyond including Mayor Joseph P. Riley, renowned chef Nathalie Dupree, and event designer extraordinaire, Tara Guérard, to share thoughts, opinions and feelings about art. They asked questions such as: Why is art important in your life? What is your first memory of art? and, why are museums important to you? The answers have been inspiring and refreshing.

Gibbes Museum of Art Hosts Art of Design Spring Luncheon and Lecture With Cathy Horyn, March 15

The Women’s Council of the Gibbes Museum of Fine Art presents Art of Design, a benefit for the museum on Friday, March 15. Renowned New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn will be the featured presenter at the auxiliary group’s annual spring luncheon. Guests will dine in the fabulous setting of the tented Gibbes courtyard while Ms. Horyn shares stories of life in the fashion fast lane. The gathering will be designed by Christina Baxter of CiBi Events and catered by Caroline’s Market and Catering. A silent auction featuring fine art, jewelry, fashion, and other unique items will take place in the Welcome Gallery of the Museum prior to the luncheon.
