Dance the Night Away at The 4th Annual Jazz Benefit Concert to Help Upward Bound Students

The 4th Annual Jazz Benefit Concert to provide academic scholarships for Upward Bound students will be held on March 30, 2012 at the Cato Center/School of the Arts beginning at 7:00 p.m. Quiana Parler will again be the featured vocal artist surrounded by Lonnie Hamilton and other local jazz greats as you dance the night away!

Upward Bound is a pre-college program helping to meet the needs of low-income students who will be the first in their family to earn a college degree. The Upward Bound jazz concert is an innovative “self-help” endeavor. They invite you to join them in theirr work to remove barriers to higher education and to provide the financial and moral support our students need for a smooth transition to college.

Charleston Concert Association Presents the Tchaikovsky St. Petersburg State Orchestra- Feb. 6th

On Monday, February 6th, the Charleston Concert Association presents the "Tchaikovsky" St. Petersburg State Orchestra at the Gaillard Auditorium. 

Maestro Leontiev, one of Russia’s finest conductors, leads the orchestra for this 2012 performance that is part of its first trans-continental tour of the U.S. Since its establishment in the years following World War II, the “Tchaikovsky” St. Petersburg State Orchestra has become an ensemble with unlimited musical possibilities. The orchestra’s extremely diverse repertoire includes baroque compositions by Vivaldi, Bach, Handel to contemporary compositions by Schnitke, Banshikov, and Desyatnikov to composers of the 20th century including Honegger, Poulenc, and Stravinsky.

Violinist Mikhail Krutik will be featured as soloist at this event. He has been awarded at several of the world’s most prestigious international competitions.

Preservation Society's Membership Oyster Roast

 The Preservation Society of Charleston will be holding their Membership Oyster Roast at the Navy Yard Officers' Quarters in the Historic District on Saturday, February 4th from 2-5 p.m.

Join them on the lawn at Quarters H & I for food, music, & fun! There will be local oysters, chili with all the fixings, hotdogs, beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages and live entertainment by the South Carolina Broadcasters.

Learn more about Quarters "A", built in 1905 as the Commandant's House. Quarters "A' has stood vacant since the closure of the Navy Base in 1996 and is in need of major stabilization work. Several structures in the Charleston Navy Yard Officers' Quarters Historic District are suffering from demolition by neglect. Members will join together to raise awareness at the Oyster Roast.

There will also be a Navy Yard Power House Tour from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm before the Roast.Tickets for this are $10, or $5 with Roast.

Free Charleston Carriage & Harbor Combo Tour for Tri-County Residents on January 29th

Preservation Society's Annual Membership Meeting & Carolopolis Awards Program, Jan. 26th

 The Preservation Society of Charleston will hold its Annual Membership Meeting and Carolopolis Awards Program on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the Riviera Theatre, 227 King Street in Charleston, SC. The Society created the Carolopolis Awards program in 1953 to recognize outstanding achievement in exterior preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation in Charleston. A reception with light refreshments will follow the awards program. All are welcome to attend.

A fine and rare example of a French, 18th century, soupière en faïence (two-handle, faïence soup tureen with lid) from Marseille with a rich, finely painted polychrome decoration of flowers and insects on a rocaille form. Red fish and shellfish surmount a domed cover. Two handles with shells and four scroll feet support the bowl.
