We're having an OYSTER ROAST for BEGIN WITH BOOKS Saturday, March 3, 2012, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at The Island House on the Stono River 2658 Swygert Blvd., Johns Island.

We’ll open oysters for you, and you’ll open books by helping us bring books to the children of Johns and Wadmalaw Islands.

There's a New Dog in Town

Jack Hurley, owner of the famous Jack's Cosmic Dogs in Mt. Pleasant has successfully opened a second Cosmic Dog on Folly Road on James Island. 

The new store is more than you can imagine and then some. I mean, name another place where you can find glow-in-the-dark grout on the tile in the restroom. (Go ahead... I dare you... turn off the lights!)

The Folly Road Cosmic Dog lights up the highway with two beautiful red rockets with yellow tailfins perched at 45-dgree angles ready to blast off into the fun world of hot dogs, Grape Nehi, Kool-Aid, fresh fries and Jack's cosmically yummy Soft-Serve Ice Cream. 

The interior is as retro as Cosmic Jack himself with stainless steel trim, stools and Formica right out of the 50's.

Jack's Weekend Pick... Join 80,000 Feet on King Street

Jack Hurley's Weekend Pick for this weekend is the Cooper River Bridge Run. Saturday will be one of the biggest days ever for King Street as almost 40,000 runners and walkers will finish their effort in downtown Charleston, one of the greatest 10K races in the country or, for that that matter, the world.

This year the race course was changed to incorporate more of King Street in the track. Previously the race participants came across John Street from Meeting to King, but this year the course will turn from Meeting on Wolfe Street to KIng then head south through The Upper King Design District, across Calhoun to Wentworth.

Post race parties will be everywhere on Upper King Street. Some of the new venues for post race Bloody Marys are Halls Chophouse, Fish, Juanita Greenbergs, Monza and Closed for Business.

Blue Bicycle Books Featured in Pat Conroy's Tour of Charleston in USA Today

Pat Conroy Coming to Blue Bicycle Books Sat. December 12

One of Jack Hurley's favorite authors, Pat Conroy is coming to his favorite Charleston bookstore, Blue Bicycle Books, Saturday December 12, from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. Conroy, the NY Times Best Selling Author, has graciously offered to come and sign copies of his blockbuster new novel South of Broad.

Just for the record, Blue Bicycle Books is about a mile north of Broad. This is Conroy's only book signing on the Charleston Peninsula.

The Blue Bicycle Books Author’s Luncheon Series continues Friday November 13 from noon to 2:00 PM with two of Jack Hurley's favorite Charleston authors Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor, discussing and signing Traveling with Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Story.

A memoir of trips to Greece and France , Pomegranates goes back 11 years, when Sue is turning 50 and contemplating writing fiction for the first time, the seed for The Secret Life of Bees just starting to germinate. Daughter Ann has just graduated from college, suffering from depression with no clear picture for her life. A blend of humor and introspection, the Kidd women reflect on the ordinary and the eternal, from bad hamburgers to the Black Madonna.
