King Street Puts Support Behind Chief Mullen and Cameras

King Street put its collective support behind Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen and the approval of his plans to install a wireless network of video cameras at locations on the peninsula by the end of this year.

Susan Lucas, the King Street Marketing Group, and Bill Hall, owner of Halls Chophouse, were interviewed by Josh Cascio of WCIV, News 4 Charleston  voicing their support for the program prior to the City Council’s 9 - 0 approval of the $316,461 contract for the camera system, with funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. There was no firm opposition.

Chief Mullen, a strong proponent of camera surveillance, has been building public support for the initiative for nearly two years in meetings with neighborhood associations and the King Street Marketing Group. The Charleston Police Department plans to install a wireless network of video cameras at locations on the peninsula by the end of this year as the initial part of a surveillance effort that is expected to expand over time.

The 10 cameras the contract will buy will be divided between the area near the Charleston passenger terminal and the area around Burke High School and the Gadsden Green public housing complex on Charleston's West Side.

The Ants Are Marching Down King Street

The Ants have begin their March Down King Street. In a tribute to Darkness to Light, artist Jeffrey Kennedy and the King Street Marketing Group present The Ants Go Marching Down King Street. The art show featuring Kennedy’s colorful, larger than life ant sculptures are now on display at Berlins Women, Mary Helen McCoy Fine Antiques, Alpha Dog Omega Cat, Kings Courtyard Hotel, Plum Elements and Lily.

Next the ants will march from Market to Calhoun August 8-14, Calhoun to Spring August 15-21, and then to the Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood August 22-28.

Kennedy has supported Darkness to Light with his sculptures since their debut at Piccolo Spoleto in 2003, where D2L founder Ann Lee saw a connection between strong little ants who move mountains carrying one grain at a time, and the one-person-at-a-time awareness campaign for child sexual abuse.

The Ants range in size from that of a small dog to the size of a horse. At left is the smaller Ant at Alpha Dog Omega Cat and on the right is a really big Ant in the window of Plum Elements.
