Pat Conroy Coming to Blue Bicycle Books Sat. December 12

Pat Conroy is coming to his favorite Charleston bookstore, Blue Bicycle Books, Saturday December 12, from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. Conroy, the NY Times Best Selling Author, has graciously offered to come and sign copies of his blockbuster new novel South of Broad.

Just for the record, Blue Bicycle Books is about a mile north of Broad. This is Conroy's only book signing on the Charleston Peninsula.

p> The Blue Bicycle Books Author’s Luncheon Series continues Friday November 13 from noon to 2:00 PM with Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor, discussing and signing Traveling with Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Story.

A memoir of trips to Greece and France , Pomegranates goes back 11 years, when Sue is turning 50 and contemplating writing fiction for the first time, the seed for The Secret Life of Bees just starting to germinate. Daughter Ann has just graduated from college, suffering from depression with no clear picture for her life. A blend of humor and introspection, the Kidd women reflect on the ordinary and the eternal, from bad hamburgers to the Black Madonna.

The talk and a lunch of croque-monsieur, frites, and salad with pomegranate seeds is at Fish Restaurant prepared by Chef Nico Romo, 442 King Street. Coastal Conservation League Sponsoring Author Abby Sallenger at Blue Bicycle Books

Abby Sallenger, author of Island in a Storm, will be at Blue Bicycle Books Thursday November 5 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. His slideshow presentation, reception and talk are  sponsored by the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League. This event is free and open to the public.

Sallenger, a coastal geologist for the USGS, tells the story of Isle Derniere , a Louisiana barrier island resort that was destroyed by a Category 4 hurricane in 1856. Unlike today, the survivors concluded that the island was too hazardous for permanent settlement and decided not to rebuild scratching plans to expand it into one of the country’s largest resorts. This true story of romance and perilous escapes is also a cautionary tale of the dangers of living on the ever-changing Southern coast in a time of warming, rising seas.

The Children's Museum Invites You To "Return to Wonderland"

The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry cordially invites you to our 2009 Gala, "Return to Wonderland" celebrating six years of serving more than 505,000 children and their families across the Lowcountry. This year's theme, Return to Wonderland will provide an exquisite backdrop for an evening of cocktails, dinner, a live auction and dancing from 6:30 to 11:00 PM at our wonderful locatiion on John Street.

All proceeds from the 2009 Gala will go to the continued education of children in the tri-county area. Donations, ticket sales, a live auction and a "wishing tree" silent auction will support new exhibit space; enhanced areas of discovery and play; tools of the imagination such as art materials, costumes, puppets, books and toys; and scholarships to underserved children and families.

News from Fish Restaurant: Executive Chef Nico Romo and Chef de Cuisine Charron Henry have created a 3-course menu based on the natural cycle of marine vegetation, dubbing their creation Predator and Prey.
